Chinese New Year

(Picture above is online example)

I found this fun art project and thought it would be a great lesson for my second graders.  We learned about China and the Chinese New Year Celebration.  This was a really good art integration project, as the students were learning about China in their classrooms.

For this lesson I focused a lot on Symmetry because they were learning about it in their classrooms.  I also tried to get them to overlap with different color paper to make their designs more interesting.

2nd Grade Op Art - Hidden Shapes

Second grade is the best! Look at how good they are...
In this lesson, I used a PowerPoint from Ms. Brown's website http://www.mrsbrownart.com/2nd.htm which helped the students learn what Op Art is all about.  They also learned about Complementary colors  - if you stare at one color for a long time, sometimes you will see the opposite of that color when you stare into a blank space.  So hopefully when you stare at their pictures for long enough, the shapes will start to disappear!

Teepee's

This lesson was super fun to teach.  The kids loved learning about the Native Americans.  I used the Promethean Board to give a PowerPoint on Native American Art/Culture.

Hidden Name Drawing

Great lesson to start the year with.  Students did a great job coming up with patterns and using many different colors.

Shading Pumpkins

I love my second graders..they are so creative! This lesson was really fun to teach. We talked about shading and making things look 3-D. 3-D is so easy to talk about now because all the kids have seen 3-D movies! So, they really understand the idea of making thinks look like they are coming out of the page.

Just Lovely

I am SO  impressed with my second graders.  They blow me away with every project we do.  They are just amazingly creative!!! This is an observational lesson where the students had to look at the flowers and draw what they actually see rather than what they think they see!  We practiced color mixing as well.  The results were just beautiful.
