What can I say... I love to teach art...but when I can also teach about nocturnal animals that are super cool, I will! I read the students an amazing story called Little Owl's Night,  The youtube video is posted above.  The owl is so adorable and has huge eyes, so it can see at night!

Mittens

This project was very successful..I played a game with the students before starting the project.  On the Promethean Board, I showed the students a line (curly, wavy, straight etc) and they had to raise their hand first to give the answer (winner gets a high five...and that's cool enough for 1st graders).  They had a lot of fun with it and were more creative with their line making!  Look at all those ZIG ZAG lines!!

Elmer the Elephant

Elmer the elephant is on of my favorite stories to read to my Kindergarten and 1st grade students.  Elmer is different from all of the other elephants, but the elephants love him because he is so special.  We made our own sponge painted Elmers! No "normal" colored elephants here.

When I grow up ...

This was my first project of the year with my 1st graders.  I love the Chef one with the chef hat!!

Harvest Corn

The first graders loved learning about the very first Thanksgiving.  We read the story This First Thanksgiving Day by Laura Krauss Melmed and T is for Turkey by Tanya Lee Stone. 

Travel to Tibet

In Tibet, the Prayer flags are meant to bless the countryside, so we decided to bring positive vibes into our art room with our own version!  The traditional Prayer flags are made using the three primary colors.  I bought really fun Japanese paper that bleeds when color is added to it.  The students were allowed to use the three primary colors and discover the secondary colors that they made when the colors bled together!
