What can I say... I love to teach art...but when I can also teach about nocturnal animals that are super cool, I will! I read the students an amazing story called Little Owl's Night,  The youtube video is posted above.  The owl is so adorable and has huge eyes, so it can see at night!

My Special education students worked really hard on their Christmas scenes.  My favorite part is the collage tree using tissue paper! 

Klimt Trees

The kids really enjoyed collaging the tissue paper and watching how the colors bled together.  We learned about Gustav Klimt and his Symbolist approach to painting.  We tried to make our own version of the Tree of Life. 

Harvest Corn

The first graders loved learning about the very first Thanksgiving.  We read the story This First Thanksgiving Day by Laura Krauss Melmed and T is for Turkey by Tanya Lee Stone. 

Best Lesson Ever!

I am so pleased with the outcome of this lesson.  It took a long time to complete, but the end results are worth it.  The 3rd graders really worked hard on their observational drawing before starting to collage.  I really focused on the sunflower itself, how BIG the petals are and the shape of them.  The drawings led to some amazing collages!

My very first post

One of my first lessons with the Kindergarten kiddy's...to celebrate our new Eastern Painted Turtle friend in the science room! 

Every Kindergarten and 1st grade lesson that I teach will start with a story.  For this lesson I read the book How the Turtle Got it's Shell by Justine Fontes. 

 Before working as an Art Teacher, I worked at an Aquarium where we try very hard to teach children that turtles can NOT leave their shell...but the story was too cute to pass up.  (Plus I tell them that turtles can't really leave their shells...just to make myself feel better! )

The kids had a lot of fun giving the turtle a colorful shell.  A good tip for this lesson is watered down glue in cups with paintbrushes..it's just easier that way!
